A recent New Scientist article "The most ancient piece of you" (4 November 2017) discussed the common ancestors of living beings today.
But are plants included in this universal common ancestor?
Their study found that ground spiders attach silk to the floor before quickly running around their prey, overwhelming them with webbing.
They remain closed until just before they deploy the silk, when the fluid pressure in the arachnid's body rises and the spigot pops open.
The ground spider is an aggressive species that uses a special type of sticky silk to wrap up its prey, including insects and other arachnids larger than themselves.
This type of silk is normally only used by spiders when they anchor webs or traps to other surfaces.
The sticky, stretchy silk rapidly dries, ensnaring the victim's legs until it is neatly trussed up.
